fISH PRINTS
THE PROCESS
THE PROCESS is the driving force of the project. Everything begins with a fresh fish and a cuttlefish (or squid), as the black ink is sourced directly from it. Once prepared — by covering the fish with ink — a white fabric is placed over it, capturing its shapes and textures.
After the printmaking process is complete, handmade field notes and stamps are added to finalize the piece, resulting in a unique artwork.
The selection of materials has a strong impact. The fabrics are repurposed bed sheets sourced from hotel textile waste. The use of natural ink allows for the fish to be consumed safely, while also providing one of the long-lasting natural pigments.
Both the fish and the ink are explored beyond printmaking, extending the artistic process into the culinary realm, where the cycle is completed with zero waste.
SUSTAINABILITY
The work uses natural ink extracted directly from cuttlefish or squid (100% edible), and supports such as recycled textiles, including hotel bed linens and other recovered fabrics. A zero-waste approach is applied: the fish is entirely consumed, and in some cases, skins are repurposed into leather in collaboration with designer Linda van Oosterhout.
FISHING & FOOD CONSCIOUSNESS
The fish and the ocean are part of the DNA of Portuguese culture, yet many of our practices continue to impact the environment. A more conscious approach is essential to protect our “blue home.” FISH PRINTS explores key questions about marine species, their capture, and the fragility of ecosystems and traditions that are increasingly threatened or already lost.
Through art, it builds a bridge between people and science, offering new perspectives to fishing communities and supporting biological understanding. In this process, the fish gains a second life by becoming a catalyst for reflection, with sustainability at its core.
LIVE PRINTING
LUZALBA is an artist known for her distinctive practice of fish printing. Her project, FISH PRINTS, unfolds multiple formats, including performative experiences at its core. Live Printing is an immersive event where audiences gather to observe, interact with, and engage with the central element: fresh fish.
Recently, public live printing art performances have taken place at the Loulé Municipal Market, as well as private presentations at Linda de Lagos Atelier.
