THE STORY

FISH PRINTS starts when the artist returns to her home country, Portugal, and chooses to contribute to her community. Living by the sea, the main question was: what can art do to preserve this environment? Perhaps it can celebrate the existence of marine species and share them in a meaningful way.

Inspired by the Japanese Gyotaku technique, LUZALBA developed her own practice by adapting its fundamental elements. These adjustments led her to a stronger concept: sustainability. At this point, art become a vehicle for exploration, as an opportunity to understand more about the ocean, marine life, the fishing industry, and conscious food consumption.

Ultimately, the artist’s goal is to raise awareness through Art, while simultaneously honoring the people and natural ecosystems that sustain her creative process.

THE PROJECT

Since 2020, FISH PRINTS has been one of the most remarkable artistic projects active in Portugal. Internationally recognized, particularly following the broadcast of documentaries by the German TV channels NDR and WDR, it has continued to gain visibility through commissioned projects such as LUSO Restaurant (30 Charlotte Street, London, UK) and Moinho da Areia in São Miguel, Azores.

Among other distinctions, the project is part of the public collection of the Museu de Vila do Bispo – Celeiro da História, with the work O Robalo da Vila. Currently, FISH PRINTS is an active partner of Loulé Criativo as an associated project.

Based in the South-West coast of Algarve, currently LUZALBA creations have focused on the sea culture, with the project Fish Prints. It recreates ancient printing techniques, as the art of printing fish, by upcycling fabrics from textile waste and black ink extracted directly from squid or cuttlefish. All printed species are naturally consumed, with no waste whatsoever. “Nothing is spoiled, everything recovers” it is an artistic ode, that finds in the creative process its own visual language.
